Eleven women from different towns, different backgrounds, and even different states showed up for a weekend away, some traveling all the way from Georgia just to be part of it.

I never imagined my first experience hunting would be for black bear, deep in the middle of nowhere outside of Windsor, North Carolina. But there I was—bundled up before daylight, nerves buzzing, stepping into a whole new world with a good friend who invited me to come see what it was all about. I didn’t go out there expecting to be a hunter. I went to feel it out —to see what it would be like, how I would react, and whether I could even handle it. Surprisingly, I did. In fac
