First Duck Hunt on the Pamlico River: A Day on the Scissor Rig with Capt. Ryan Peedin

There’s something special about first-time experiences in the outdoors—the rush of adrenaline, the lessons learned, and the memories made. My first-ever duck hunt took place this past November on the Pamlico River in North Carolina and was no exception. Guided by Capt. Ryan Peedin of Triple B Guide Service, I embarked on a hunting adventure unlike any I had experienced before.

The morning started early, the kind of early that makes you question your life choices until you step outside and breathe in the crisp, salt-tinged air. Capt. Peedin pulled up to the dock on his boat and we loaded up. Getting on a boat with 6 other strangers can be a little bit intimidating at times but Capt. Peedin quickly put me at ease and reassured me that he'd make sure I had a great first Duck hunting experience. We made our way out into the sound and set up the the scissor rig, a floating contraption designed for open-water duck hunting. The rig, with its camouflaged sides and low profile, blended seamlessly into the surroundings, making it an ideal hideaway as we waited for the ducks to fly in.

From the very start, Capt. Peedin’s kindness and patience set the tone for the day. He took the time to walk me through every step of the hunt—how to position myself, what to look for as ducks approached the decoy spread, and when to take the shot. His knowledge of waterfowl behavior, wind patterns, and the art of concealment was evident, and his willingness to share that knowledge made all the difference. One thing I am still amazed at is his ability to tell you exactly what breed of duck was flying towards just based of its wings and shape.

As the sun began to rise, painting the Pamlico in hues of gold and orange, the first ducks appeared on the horizon. My heart pounded as Capt. Peedin coached me through the process. "Watch their wings," he advised. "If they’re locked up and coming in, get ready." The anticipation built with each passing second until, finally, it was time to take the shot.

The morning continued with moments of excitement, near misses, and small victories. Through it all, Capt. Peedin remained encouraging, never letting a missed opportunity dampen the spirit of the hunt. His enthusiasm was contagious, reminding me that the experience was just as important as the outcome.

By the time we packed up and headed back to shore, I had gained a newfound respect for waterfowl hunting. The patience it required, the skill it demanded, and the camaraderie it fostered made it an unforgettable experience. More than anything, I was grateful for the guidance and support of Capt. Ryan Peedin—someone who not only knows his craft but genuinely enjoys sharing it with others.

If you’re looking for a top-notch waterfowl hunting experience in Eastern North Carolina, I can’t recommend Triple B Guide Service enough. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or a first-timer like me, Capt. Peedin ensures a day on the water that’s as rewarding as it is exhilarating.

One hunt down, many more to go. I think I might just be hooked.
